Murder on the micropore

The researchers perform catalytic tests in a continuous fixed-bed reactor until deactivation, as reflected in the conversion (X) versus cumulative turnover (CT) curves in the figure. The location and distribution of coke in the micropores is revealed by powder neutron diffraction, whereas gas chromatography−mass spectrometry, 13C and 1H magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance and operando diffuse reflectance ultraviolet−visible spectroscopy are used to study its structure and composition. They find that for ZSM-5 and ZSM-35 coke predominantly forms along the 10-MR channels, with a higher concentration around the pore intersecting regions, and mostly consists of mono- and tricyclic arenes. For SSZ-13 coke is found in the 8-MR cages but it is also interconnected along the channels forming larger structures.
