Neglected no longer: Selective C–H activation of the non-resonant C3 benzylic position of pyridine

Unlike the 2- and 4-positions, benzylic C(sp3)–H sites in 3-alkylpyridines have no direct communication with the pyridine nitrogen and are not susceptible to traditional forms of catalysis. In this issue of Chem, Stahl and co-workers disclose an effective benzylic chlorination of 3-alkylpyridines, providing valuable access to this resistant position.
