Coating treatments on jute fabrics for improving their functionality and minimizing the storage losses of grains: A review

Grains are prone to deterioration during storage due to the interaction of physical, biological, and socioeconomic factors contributing to a significant post-harvest loss. It is adversely affecting global food security. Jute () is the most common natural fibre used for the packaging of grains as it is cheaper, non-toxic, lignocellulosic bast fibre and is an alternative biodegradable material to hazardous plastic materials. However, the water-loving nature, as well as temperature fluctuation inside and outside of jute bags, favour the growth of insects/pests and degrade the quality of the stored grains. In order to combat these problems, different suitable coating materials such as wax, microencapsulated phase change materials, rodent-repelling agents, antimicrobial compounds, natural antioxidants from plant extract, sodium metasilicate nonahydrate, chitosan nanoparticles, resins, banana pseudostem sap, agro-residues and bio-insecticides in jute fabrics are being incorporated for improving the air-moisture barrier properties and storability of grains. The present review paper covers the potentiality of coating treatments of jute fabrics used in grain storage. This study will be helpful for the farmers and textile industries to develop coated jute bags with improved safe storage of grains for a prolonged period.
